Mozambique Intends to Recover 5 Thousand Hectares of Mangroves by December

Mozambique plans to reach the goal of restoring 5 thousand hectares of mangrove forest by the end of this year, thus fulfilling the commitment made in 2017, in New York, at the United Nations Conference on Oceans, a claim framed within the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal number 14, on marine life.

The information was advanced this Wednesday, April 13, by the Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Lídia Cardoso, in the presentation of Mozambique’s report on the Compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Agenda-2030, in the 7th Conference “Our Ocean”, being held in Palau, a small state located in Micronesia in the western Pacific Ocean.

The annual forum, under the theme “Our Ocean, Our People, Our Prosperity,” which brings together countries and other relevant actors in ocean governance, including academia, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and civil society, aims to review the various commitments made to reverse the scenario of ocean degradation as a result of human action and the growing impact of climate change.

Regarding Mozambique, the minister made a positive balance of the important commitments undertaken, especially the preparation of the Maritime Area Management Plan, approval of the Mangal Management Strategy and the Mangal Ecosystem Restoration Plan, highlighting the fact that the country is currently at 79% in the planting of the five thousand hectares projected, stating that we are in a position to fully meet this goal by the end of the year.

“The holder of the Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries spoke of the ongoing process of increasing the protected marine areas, as well as the development of the Blue Economy Strategy, as one of the results of the 2nd Edition of the “Crescendo Azul” Conference, held in November, in the city of Vilankulo, Inhambane province,” reports Notícias.
