Gorongosa National Park Receives International Conservation Award

Gorongosa National Park (PNG), located in Sofala province, was honoured this Wednesday (2) at the 19th edition of the Biodiversity Conservation Awards, promoted by the Spanish BBVA Foundation, in the category of biodiversity conservation in the world.

The award was given in recognition of the park’s ecological restoration work, which is considered an example in wildlife conservation, the newspaper Noticias reported.

According to the jury, Gorongosa National Park was honoured for its ‘remarkable results’ in preserving species of large mammals such as elephants, lions, buffalo and antelopes. The award emphasises the effort to recover the park’s fauna, which was severely affected by the civil war that devastated Mozambique for 16 years.

The jury also highlighted the difficulties faced in carrying out this conservation work in a country that is still recovering from the effects of war. “The successes achieved in Gorongosa represent a source of inspiration for other African nations,” said the BBVA Foundation statement.

The Gorongosa National Park restoration project, which has been ongoing for several years, involved the reintroduction of species and recovery of degraded ecosystems, with an approach that includes the participation of local communities in the conservation process.

According to the information, this international recognition underlines the importance of the park as an example of environmental recovery and biodiversity conservation in Mozambique, and reinforces the role of Gorongosa as a global reference in the preservation of endangered species.
