The Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation (BIOFUND) recently completed ten years of existence in Mozambique, since it was officially created by Resolution 69/2011 of December 29, of the Council of Ministers. To date, the organization has disbursed, for Conservation areas, more than 12.7 million dollars.
Available information states that BIOFUND is the first environmental fund that mobilizes, applies and manages financial resources for the exclusive benefit of biodiversity conservation in Mozambique.
It was created according to the parameters of the CFA (Conservation Finance Alliance), where it has already provided notable services to the cause of Conservation, justifying the decision of the Council of Ministers to formally recognize this foundation as having Public Utility Status (through Resolution 08/2012 of April 13).
“The training initiatives and training conducted and financed by BIOFUND have involved about 150 people in the different provinces of the country and about 37,000 people in actions of awareness and environmental education,” advances the organization through a statement.
BIOFUND raises two distinct types of funds: Endowment funds and Sinking funds. BIOFUND’s capitalization fund (Endowment), made up of donations from German Cooperation through KfW, GEF through the World Bank, AFD (France), and Conservation International, has reached 58 million dollars, where part of the investment income is used for BIOFUND’s funding.
While respecting the principle of not promoting large celebrations, the Board of Directors of the Foundation has decided to carry out some actions to commemorate this important event, which began on July 7 at its 10th General Assembly.
“The planned actions are intended to mark the main results and thank the support and contribution that BIOFUND has received from its partners and the Conservation Community,” concludes the statement of the organization.
