The National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) on Monday 16 September validated a project for the Effective Protection and Sustainable Management of the Miombo Forest and the landscape of Gilé National Park, in Zambézia province, central Mozambique.
According to information provided by Agência de Informação de Moçambique, the project is valued at 4 million dollars and will reinforce the programmes being implemented by the government and partners, in particular ‘Moz Rural and Promote Biodiversity’, funded by the World Bank and the European Union.
For the director-general of ANAC, Pejul Calenga, the initiative includes the implementation of the Maputo Declaration on the Miombo Forest, the sustainable use of natural resources, livelihoods for communities, strengthening the management of marine areas and knowledge.
‘We are living in challenging times, where climate change, environmental degradation and the loss of biodiversity are real threats that require quick and effective responses,’ he said during a meeting in Maputo city.
Calenga explained that the conservation actions in the Gilé National Park and the restoration of the Miombo Forest will contribute to economic growth, combating deforestation and desertification, thus helping to improve landscape management and conservation.
‘We are going to study mechanisms for expanding marine conservation areas, within the scope of the international commitments Mozambique has made,’ he said.
