A coalition of various organisations is providing humanitarian assistance to Mozambican refugees in Malawi living in Nyamithuthu camp, Nsanje district, with a package that includes essential goods such as laundry soap, energy-efficient cookers and cash to help alleviate the challenges faced by these displaced people, Malawi 24 reported.
According to Gladys Thawani Kawiya, the person in charge of the initiative in Nsanje and a senior official at the Catholic Agency for Relief and Development (CARD), the intervention is being carried out as part of the Drought Response Project, a programme funded with 170,000 euros (11.2 million meticals).
The initiative aims to respond to the immediate needs of vulnerable communities affected by drought and displacement.
As part of the project, the coalition is making cash transfers worth 50,000 kwachas – Malawi’s currency – (1811 meticals) to each of the 3,000 beneficiary families. In addition to financial aid, the initiative also provides access to drinking water for 15 days, a fundamental intervention for maintaining hygiene and preventing water-borne diseases in rural areas.
The coalition driving this initiative is made up of several organisations, including Self Help Africa, Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) and Care International, among others. Their joint efforts aim to provide sustainable relief and restore dignity to displaced families in Nyamithuthu camp.
This intervention emphasises the power of partnerships in resolving humanitarian crises and supporting displaced communities. With continued collaboration, the coalition hopes to bring lasting relief and stability to people affected by displacement in the region.
