Vale Produces 57,000 Seedlings for Reforestation

Brazilian mining company Vale said that it has produced over 57,000 seedlings of native species for reforestation in Mozambique, as part of the project to plant a ‘green curtain’ around the wall separating the mining area from communities.

According to Vale, in a statement, the action results from its Environmental Management Plan, which has already made it possible to reforest more than 260 hectares at the Moatize mine to minimise the spread of dust over inhabited areas close to the exploration areas.

“This initiative has also made it possible to replace forest species to maintain the diversity of flora and reposition the source of wildlife food and support for surrounding populations that depend heavily on flora,” the company said.

According to the document, about 650 kilos of seeds of 30 plant species were collected during the previous year.

In 2020, between January and December, the mining company donated around 4,500 species of fruit and shade tree seedlings in all neighbourhoods of communities in the Moatize district.

In Mozambique, Vale is the main coal mining company, which in turn is the country’s main export product, especially to Asia.

In January, Vale announced its intention to pull out of coal mining in the country, justifying its aim to be carbon neutral by 2050 and reduce some of its main sources of carbon pollution by 2030.

The company has already signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese partner Mitsui, allowing both parties to structure the exit of Mitsui from the Moatize coal mine and the Nacala Logistics Corridor (NLC), as the first step for Vale’s divestment of its coal business.
