The death toll from Tropical Cyclone Gombe in Mozambique has risen to 51, the spokesman for the country’s National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD), Germano Amado, told reporters.
Four people were missing and 80 were injured as a result of the cyclone, with most occurring in the northern province of Nampula, with 48 people dead, and another three deaths occurred in the central province of Zambezia, he said. Of the people who died, 47 were victims of landslides, three due to falling trees and one due to electric shock.
According to INGD data, the cyclone has affected over 403,000 people and displaced over 20,800.
More than 45,000 homes have been totally destroyed and more than 30,400 partially damaged, and more than 2,600 flooded.
Tropical Cyclone Gombe entered Mozambique on the 11th, with winds of 165 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 230.
Mozambique is in the middle of a cyclonic season with storms and flooding that is typical of this time of year in the country.
Gombe has hit Mozambique three years after Cyclone Idai and Cyclone Kenneth battered the central and northern regions of the country in what was one of the most severe rainy seasons in living memory.
