The Mozambican authorities reported on Tuesday (20) that the tropical depression located east of Madagascar has evolved into a moderate tropical storm and has been baptised with the name “Eleanor”.
According to the National Meteorological Institute (INAM), this system could change to the category of tropical cyclone on Wednesday (21) and could influence the weather in some regions of the country.
“Projections indicate that its interaction with other meteorological systems could influence the weather, causing moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in the central and northern regions of Mozambique,” the organisation explained in a statement.
Faced with this scenario, the institution assured that it is monitoring the trajectory of these systems and appealed to the population to continue to follow the meteorological information and warnings issued by the competent authorities.
Last Sunday, the evolution of tropical cyclone Djoungou, which formed and intensified in Madagascar, was reported, with heavy rain forecast for the Mozambique channel as well as the mainland.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries in the world most severely affected by climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
The 2018-19 rainy season was one of the most severe on record: 714 people died, including 648 victims of cyclones Idai and Kenneth, two of the biggest ever to hit the country.
