The Contingency Plan to respond to the needs imposed by the 2023-24 rainy season on the city of Maputo is valued at 1.1 million dollars, according to Maputo City Council spokeswoman Alice de Abreu.
“UN-Women and the World Bank have already expressed their willingness to financially support the Plan’s activities, and interventions have already begun in some parts of the city,” said the source quoted by the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM).
Speaking as part of the city’s day celebrations, Alce de Abreu said that work was underway on some roads in order to reduce congestion during rainy days, emphasising that more buses would be made available in the coming days.
“The capital is one of the beneficiaries of the MOVE Maputo project, which is under the government’s remit, and with it we intend to take care of the issue of access roads and transport. At least 17 kilometres of roads will be rehabilitated and asphalted in the cities of Maputo and Matola,” he concluded.
Last season, the rain affected around 14,000 people and displaced 180 families in Maputo city, as well as four deaths, according to data from the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD).
