The Green Climate Fund (GCF) will provide a total of 26 million euros (1.7 billion meticals) for a social protection and climate adaptation project in Mozambique, with a view to benefiting almost one million people, RTP Notícias reported on Monday 22 July .
Called ‘Building climate resilience by linking climate adaptation and social protection through decentralised planning in Mozambique’, the initiative will be implemented by Save the Children Australia and will focus on offering benefits to rural populations, including improving nutritional food security, creating local employment and empowering young women.
“Mozambique is highly vulnerable to climate change due to its dependence on climate-sensitive agriculture and the frequent occurrence of extreme weather events. The country faces significant challenges, such as rising temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts and more intense and frequent cyclones and floods,’ said the organisation in a statement published by Lusa.
According to the organisation, climate impacts seriously affect food security, water resources and livelihoods, especially for the rural population, adding that the project includes a social protection component to target people and provide support to communities.
The note also highlighted that similar projects are being developed in 35 countries, totalling investments of one billion dollars (918 million euros), approved at the 39th meeting of the CGF board, held on 18 July.
‘The decision expands the GCF’s portfolio to 270 projects, totalling an expected 58.7 billion dollars, including 14.9 billion dollars in committed GCF funding,’ it said.
The institution explained that it had recently ‘intensified its focus on climate adaptation, especially in vulnerable regions’.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by global climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
