The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources is calling for more collaboration between the countries of the Southern African region in order to improve the management of shared river basins.
For Carlos Mesquita, the formulation of joint policies can help reduce the risk of water scarcity in the context of climate change and natural disasters.
Mesquita also believes it is important to invest in expanding internal water retention capacity.
Carlos Mesquita was speaking today in Maputo at the launch of a book by hydrology specialist Agostinho Vilanculos entitled ‘Water Cooperation in the Southern Region in the Context of Climate Emergency’.
He said that Agostinho Vilanculos’ work is a reflection on the reality of water resource management in the country.
The author, Agostinho Vilanculos, said that his book aims to raise awareness of the importance of river basin management and the conflicts that can arise from unequal use between nations.
Agostinho Vilanculos’ book covers the history of international rivers, the principles of water co-operation and the factors that contribute to the emergence of conflicts in river basins and potential risks in the region.
