Centre of Mozambique Braced For Further Heavy Rainfall

Mozambique’s National Meteorological Institute (INAM) on Friday warned of “moderate to heavy” rainfall in the provinces of Zambezia and Sofala, in the centre of the country.

Inam predicts periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, which may temporarily occur in an intense regime, caused by the persistent influence of the low pressure system approaching central Mozambique, Inam said in a statement.

The same warning identifies eight districts in Zambezia province as “risk areas” including Pebane, Maganja da Costa, Mopeia, as well as the provincial capital, Quelimane.

In Sofala, according to Inam, there are five risk areas, especially Marromeu, Caia, Dondo and the city of Beira, the provincial capital.

“On the other hand, the intertropical convergence zone will continue to influence the weather in the north of the country,” says Inam, which also predicts “significant amounts of rainfall” especially in the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado.

Mozambique is in the middle of the rainy season, which runs from October to April, a period in which cyclones Chido and Dikeledi have already hit the north of the country.

On 13 January, severe tropical cyclone Dikeledi hit Mozambique, causing at least 11 deaths and affecting another 250,000 people, according to the latest official report from the Mozambican authorities.

Cyclone Chido, which hit Mozambique on 14 December, caused the deaths of at least 120 people and affected 450,000 others.

Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season.
