Cholera Outbreak: Over 470 New Cases in Early February as Vaccination Campaign Rolls Out

Mozambique recorded 473 new cholera cases and two deaths in the first four days of February, bringing the total to 61 fatalities since the beginning of this outbreak in September, according to official bulletins.

According to the latest disease bulletin from the National Directorate of Public Health, covering data from September 3 to February 4, of the 4,340 cholera cases reported during this period, 1,832 were in Nampula province, with 23 deaths; 1,692 in Tete, with 28 deaths; and 700 in Cabo Delgado, with eight deaths. In the previous report, up to January 31, 3,867 cholera cases had been recorded in this outbreak, with 59 deaths.

In the 24 hours prior to the last report, 110 new cases were recorded, along with one patient leaving hospitalization. On February 4, there were 57 patients admitted and 53 under outpatient care.

The outbreak is currently active in the districts of Marara, Tsangano, Moatize, Changara, Cahora Bassa, and Tete in Tete province; Guro in Manica province; and Morrumbala in Zambézia, in central Mozambique. It is also active in Eráti and Memba in Nampula province, and Montepuez, Metuge, Pemba, and Mecufi in Cabo Delgado in the north. In the previous cholera outbreak, from October 17, 2024, to July 20, 2025, 4,420 cases were recorded, of which 3,590 were in Nampula province, with a total of 64 deaths.

Mozambican authorities plan to vaccinate over 1.7 million people against cholera this week, by Sunday, across five districts in four provinces—Niassa, Cabo Delgado, Zambézia, and Sofala.

The goal is to “cover 1,757,229 people aged one year or older” in a vaccination campaign carried out at health facilities and within communities through mobile brigades, according to the Ministry of Health.

At least 169 people died from cholera in Mozambique in 2025, among around 40,000 cases, the Minister of Health, Ussene Isse, reported on December 10, urging communities to observe personal and collective hygiene measures.

The Government of Mozambique aims to eliminate cholera “as a public health problem” in the country by 2030, according to a plan approved on September 16 by the Council of Ministers and valued at 31 billion meticais (418.5 million euros).

The objective is “to have a Mozambique free from cholera as a public health problem by 2030, where communities have access to safe water, sanitation, and quality healthcare, achieved through multisectoral, coordinated actions informed by scientific evidence,” said government spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa.
