Cholera Kills Nine People in Two Weeks in Manica

Nine people have died of cholera in Manica province in the last two weeks. Health authorities say open-air faecalism, coupled with the consumption of contaminated food, may be contributing to the increase in cases and deaths from the disease.

According to Chief Medical Officer, Flavio Meque, Manica has been plagued by the cholera outbreak since February and so far, the health sector has recorded over 500 cases of the disease.

“Of the people who have died, some are from Tambara district and others from Chimoio district. They are patients who arrived in a very critical state and it was not possible to revive them, so they ended up losing their lives,” explained Flávio Meque.

According to the source, the city of Chimoio has the highest number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting, so mapping work is underway in the neighbourhoods to prevent more cases.

“We are having cases at the level of the 34 neighbourhoods that exist in the city of Chimoio. In each of them, we have at least two to three cases of the disease, so we say that the situation is critical,” he stressed.

Flávio Meque added that “most of the population doesn’t have latrines and the few that do have them don’t have better conditions. We have been doing awareness-raising work so that, at least, the cleaning of latrines is guaranteed in order to prevent further reproduction of flies, which are the ‘carriers’ of the cholera vibrio”.

The cholera treatment centre, set up in the Chissui health centre in Chimoio, has 54 inpatients.
