Chinese Government Willing to Train Mozambican Military to Fight Terrorism

Terrorism in Cabo Delgado was the subject of debate during meetings between the Mozambican and Chinese governments, as part of the six-day working visit that Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi made to the Asian country.

According to information provided by Agência de Informação de Moçambique, the Chinese government expressed its willingness to support the training of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) in various areas, including maritime protection and combating drug trafficking.

‘In the next few days the Chinese military authorities will present the strategic details for training the national military, which should receive important knowledge, especially in the area of maritime protection,’ explained the head of state.

The Mozambican leader emphasised that during the bilateral meetings, the Chinese promised to provide assistance to the country, adding that the fight against terrorism encompasses several countries with different ideologies.

For his part, President Xi Jinping said that his country supports Mozambican efforts to combat terrorism and maintain peace and stability, adding that he was ready to co-operate closely in the creation of multilateral platforms.

‘We are willing to expand cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, energy and mineral resources, agriculture and the digital economy, and to support Mozambique’s industrialisation and economic diversification,’ he said.

Jinping said he hoped that in the coming year both sides would join forces to carry forward the friendship, deepen mutually beneficial relations and add new content to the comprehensive strategic partnership.

Cabo Delgado province has been facing terrorist attacks for more than six years, which led to a military response since July 2021, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community, liberating districts near the gas projects.
After a period of relative stability, new attacks and movements were recorded in the first few months of the year, leading foreign entities to restrict travel to that part of the country.
