China to Disburse 195M Meticals in Humanitarian Aid to Mozambique

The Chinese government will disburse about 195 million meticals (three million dollars, at the current exchange rate) to help Mozambique in humanitarian matters.

The amount is part of the new package of support measures for countries covered by the Belt and Road International Cooperation Initiative announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to Mozambican Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane, who was speaking to reporters in Wenzhou, during his visit to China, President, Xi has announced an investment portfolio of around fifty billion dollars.

Each country, he explained, will have to submit a project to benefit from funding and Mozambique wants to invest in the agricultural sector.

The Prime Minister also said that the Chinese multinational Tsingshan Industry has expressed its willingness to invest in the central Mozambican port of Beira.

According to Maleiane, institutions in the investment field, especially the Agency for Investment and Export Promotion (APIEX), are working in order to speed up the cooperation.

The Chinese company is also interested in building an industrial park in Dondo district, which will have the mission to serve hinterland countries. It also intends to build a dry port at Machipanda, on the border with Zimbabwe.

“The government is working in order to see the project implemented”, the Prime Minister said.
