Chapo’s Inauguration: Filipe Nyusi Hands Overs Power and Announces ‘Dismantling of Terrorists’

During his last speech as President of the Republic, at the inauguration of Daniel Chapo this Wednesday (15), Filipe Nyusi announced that the terrorist groups that have plagued Cabo Delgado for years ‘have been dismantled.’

The outgoing head of state highlighted the progress made in the fight against insurgency and praised the work of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), as well as troops from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Nyusi revealed that he met with the DSF for the last time this morning and received information that the terrorists have lost operational capacity due to the ongoing military offensive. For him, this result reflects the commitment of national and international forces who, since 2021, have been fighting the insurgents and recovering strategic territories.

The announcement comes at a time when Cabo Delgado is trying to recover from the instability caused by terrorist attacks, which since 2017 have left a trail of destruction, resulting in more than 4,000 deaths and around a million displaced people.

Since 2021, the presence of Mozambican military forces, in collaboration with Rwandan and SADC troops, has been fundamental in halting the insurgents’ advances, allowing a return to normality in some strategic areas, such as those linked to natural gas projects.

Despite the progress announced by Nyusi, the insurgency has still not been completely eradicated. At the end of August 2024, insurgents ambushed a patrol of Rwandan forces in Mocímboa da Praia, resulting in the death of a soldier and rekindling concerns about the persistence of the terrorist threat.

In his farewell speech, Nyusi recognised that the fight against terrorism is not over, but stressed that the situation is much more under control than it was at the start of the conflict, and called for continued security efforts and the implementation of social and economic development strategies that guarantee the sustainable stability of the region.

With the inauguration of Daniel Chapo, the new President inherits a scenario of greater military control over the insurgency, but also the challenge of consolidating peace and boosting the reconstruction of the areas affected by the conflict.

The expectation now lies with the measures that will be adopted by the new government to ensure that the progress made is maintained and that the people of Cabo Delgado can finally live in an environment of security and stability.
