Mozambican President Daniel Chapo is in Brazil to attend the Oil & Gas Forum 2026 in Rio de Janeiro on Monday (21 September), before travelling to New York to participate in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
At the Oil & Gas Forum 2026, Chapo will serve as the keynote speaker, delivering an address centred on the theme "Energy Evolution for the Future." His participation is intended to raise Mozambique's profile in global energy cooperation and the hydrocarbons sector.
Following the forum, Chapo will travel to New York to take part in the 81st UN General Assembly. The session formally opened on 8 September, with high-level debates scheduled to begin on Tuesday (22 September).
The 81st session is being held under the theme "Restoring Trust, Reimagining the Future" and will be the last to be presided over by Secretary-General António Guterres, whose term concludes before his successor is expected to assume office in January 2027.
Key issues on the General Assembly agenda include the reform of the United Nations, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and global peace and security. The general high-level debate will run from 22 to 26 September and on 28 September.
On the sidelines of the general debate, high-level meetings are also planned to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, as well as to address climate action and the just transition.
The agenda further includes debates on the existential threats posed by rising sea levels and on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response — all of which form part of the high-level programme of the 81st General Assembly session.
Through participation in both events, President Chapo will pursue an international agenda focused first on energy cooperation and the hydrocarbons sector, and subsequently on the principal issues under discussion at the 81st UN General Assembly.
