Mozambican President Daniel Chapo travelled to Durban on Monday to attend the 46th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), held in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the Mozambique News Agency (AIM), the summit will be marked by the handover of the bloc's rotating presidency from Zimbabwe to South Africa, and is expected to focus on strengthening integration and cooperation among member states. A statement from the Mozambican presidency said heads of state and government would examine political, economic, and social issues, with particular emphasis on peace and security across the region.
The agenda also includes an assessment of the key challenges facing southern African countries and the adoption of measures aimed at deepening regional integration, reinforcing stability, and promoting sustainable development. The 46th Ordinary Summit was preceded on Sunday, 16 August, by the Troika Summit of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
The organisation's Council of Ministers met from 12 to 14 August to prepare the matters to be submitted for consideration by the heads of state and government. Among the issues potentially on the table is the violence against foreign nationals in South Africa, including Mozambican citizens, against a backdrop of calls for dialogue and respect for migration rules.
President Chapo is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Maria dos Santos Lucas, Minister of Economy Basílio Muhate, Mozambique's High Commissioner to South Africa Maria Gustava, and Mozambique's High Commissioner to Botswana and Permanent Representative to SADC António Macheve.
