The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) is forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall in the provinces of Sofala and Zambézia from Friday 7 February.
According to an article published on Thursday (6) in the Mozambican Information Agency, the phenomenon is the result of the influence of a persistent low-pressure system that is approaching the coastal strip in the centre of the country.
A note from INAM, to which AIM had access, warns of the possibility of heavy rain, especially in the districts of Pebane, Maganja da Costa, Namacurra, Nicoadala, Inhassunge, Chinde, Luabo, Mopeia and the city of Quelimane, in Zambezia province. In Sofala, the rain could affect the districts of Marromeu, Caia, Inhaminga, Dondo and the city of Beira.
‘On the other hand, the Intertropical Convergence Zone will continue to influence the weather in the north of the country, causing significant rainfall, especially in the provinces of Cabo Delgado and coastal Nampula,’ the statement said.
Given the possibility of heavy rainfall and the associated risks, INAM recommends taking precautionary and safety measures. The meteorological institution had already warned on Thursday (6) of the existence of another meteorological system in the South West Indian Ocean Basin, tropical cyclone Vince, which, however, poses no danger to the Mozambique Channel.
