Candidates Make Last Calls to Vote Before Days of Reflection

Over this weekend, the campaigns of the four presidential candidates in Mozambique are coming to an end, with the last ones making appeals and promises for the vote on 9 October.

Frelimo’s presidential candidate for the general elections on 9 October divided the closing of his election campaign into two moments. One of these took place in Nampula and the other in Matola, in Maputo province. In Nacala-Porto in the northern province of Nampula, Daniel Chapo asked the population to vote for him and his party so that they can continue to develop the country.

‘We came here to Nacala to say that Frelimo and its candidate have a very clear manifesto for what we want in the coming years. The first thing is that we want peace, to maintain peace so that Mozambique can develop, without peace there can be no development,’ said Daniel Chapo, the Frelimo candidate.

MDM presidential candidate Lutero Simango also chose to close his election campaign in the north of the country, specifically in the city of Nampula. There, Lutero Simango asked the people for a vote of confidence on 9 October so that he could give the people better living conditions.

‘We will govern to benefit everyone. In our government there will be no first class Mozambicans and second class Mozambicans, we will treat everyone equally. In our governance, the state is the state, in our governance we will put an end to the theft of state money,’ promised Lutero Simango.

Ossufo Momade, presidential candidate for the largest opposition party, Renamo, chose the municipality of Matola to close his election campaign. In his speech to his supporters, he thanked Mozambicans for their support. He also recalled the five pillars of his candidacy, namely the fight against corruption, and said that he will declare war on corruption if he comes to power.

‘We want to declare war on corruption and bureaucracy in our government. These insidious evils not only undermine the institutions that sustain our democracy, but also cause immense suffering to the people who depend on public services and compliance with the law,’ said Ossufo Momade.
