The Canadian Minister of International Development and head of the Canadian Pacific Economic Development Agency, Harjit S. Sajjan, announced on Wednesday (28), the availability of about 6 million dollars for the implementation of a project to support and empower women and girls, residing in poor communities in Bangladesh, Malawi, Mozambique, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Called “Empowering Women and Girls in the Commonwealth”, the initiative came about through an agreement signed between Canada and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), and will run for a period of four years, Mirage News reported.
According to the explanation, the programme will use open, distance and technology-enabled learning so that it provides female beneficiaries with education and skills development that will support their daily lives all the way to achieving sustainable stability.
“Canada firmly believes that promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls is the most effective approach to eradicating poverty and building a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world,” the Minister stressed.
As part of the strategic partnership with Mozambique, in February this year, the Canadian government revealed the existence of about 800 million meticals to fund economic empowerment projects for people living in rural areas, adding that it was already being implemented in the districts of Marracuene and Manhiça, in Maputo province, and in Chókwè, Guijá and Manjacaze, in Gaza.
