Cabo Delgado: UK Advises Against Travelling to Chiùre

The British authorities have included Chiùre, the scene of several terrorist attacks since February, on the list of districts in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, where they advise against “all travel”, according to a warning that Lusa had access to today.

According to information sent to travellers by the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), responsible for protecting British interests and citizens abroad, updated on Thursday, that body continues to “advise against all travel”, as it has since 2023, to the districts of Mueda, Nangade, Palma – except the city, for essential travel – Mocímboa da Praia, Muidumbe, Meluco, Macomia, Quissanga and Ibo.

“The FCDO now advises against all travel to the Chiùre district,” reads the same update.

Around 100,000 people fled in February and March from Chiùre district, in the south of Cabo Delgado province, towards neighbouring Nampula province and other districts, due to the intensification of terrorist attacks, which caused deaths and the destruction of homes and public buildings.

Cabo Delgado province has been facing attacks claimed by Islamic State for more than six years, which has led to a military response since July 2021, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects.
