Cabo Delgado: Millennium bim Returns to Palma Two Years After Terrorist Attack

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, inaugurated yesterday (3) the Millennium bim branch in the village of Palma, Cabo Delgado province, in the northern region, two years after a terrorist attack that killed hundreds and destroyed several infrastructures, particularly financial services.

The return of Millennium bim to Palma, according to the President, is testimony to the determination and courage of that financial institution that brings back the dream of the approximately 43,000 inhabitants living in the district, also giving greater credibility to the good economic prospects of Palma and all neighbouring regions.

“It is with great joy and with the hope of a promising future that we have come to witness the reopening of the Millennium bim branch, whose activity was interrupted by a cowardly and faceless enemy,” said Nyusi, quoted by the Agência de Informação de Informação (AIM).

Nyusi referred to Palma as being completely different, “because it has returned to being that cosy village and, in some respects, even better”.

With the bank up and running, residents no longer have to hoard savings indoors, with the risk of loss, or travel long distances with large sums of money in search of the nearest bank.

According to Mr Nyusi, the return of the bank is due to the stability that Palma now offers in relation to the terrorist threat. “We will not waver in defending this part of our country,” the Mozambican statesman warned, adding that “we will do everything to ensure stability and peace in all districts and links between the districts of Palma, Mocímboa, Macomia, Nangade, Muidumbe and Quissanga.”

Nyusi recognises that calls for vigilance within Mozambican society still prevail in order to hinder the penetration and action of enemies of the country’s development.

To this end, the ruler took the opportunity to once again launch an appeal addressed “to compatriots who are still on the side of terrorists”.

For his part, the chairman of the board of directors (PCA) of Millenium bim, Rui Fonseca, said that the bank’s return “shows its commitment and its commitment to serve this population of Palma, to serve the economic agents of Palma and to ensure that normality in this part of the country returns as quickly as possible for the peace of mind of all and so that this province can progress as it deserves”.

Cabo Delgado province has been affected by a conflict since 2017 that has terrorised the population. Groups of armed rebels have looted and massacred villages and towns across the province and a variety of attacks have been claimed by the ‘arm’ of the self-proclaimed Islamic State in that region. The conflict has claimed more than 4,000 lives (according to data from The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project) and displaced at least one million people, according to an assessment by Mozambican authorities.
