Mozambique’s minister of justice, constitutional and religious affairs, Mateus Saize, called for “unity and vigilance” on Wednesday in the face of the insecurity that has affected the north of the country since 2017.
“It is more important than ever that Mozambicans, in their different affiliations and beliefs, unite and be vigilant, spreading mutual trust,” said the minister, during the commemorations of the Days of Religion and Human Fraternity in Maputo.
At issue is an armed rebellion that has been raging since 2017 in the province of Cabo Delgado, with attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist group Islamic State.
According to the newly appointed president, the north of the country is facing an enemy that “refuses to show its face” but continues to promote “hate” speech.
“Undermining the spirit of tolerance and respect for diversity,” added Mateus Saize.
The last major attack in that province, which is rich in gas, took place on 10 and 11 May on the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents sacking the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and Rwandan soldiers, who are supporting Mozambique in the fight against the rebels.
In January, President Daniel Chapo asked the new minister of justice, constitutional, and religious affairs to work towards an efficient and vigorous justice system in the fight against corruption.
“We need a justice system that is efficient, transparent and that vigorously fights all forms of corruption and injustice,” Daniel Chapo appealed after swearing in Mateus Saize.
The head of state asked the new ruler to take action to promote the rule of law and guarantee access to justice for Mozambicans, saying that this is one of the ways to ensure peace in the country.
