Cabo Delgado: Insecurity Prevents Population from Returning to Quiterajo

The ongoing insecurity continues to prevent residents from returning to the administrative post of Quiterajo, in Macomia district, Cabo Delgado province. Local authorities confirm that the area remains partially outside state control, despite ongoing operations by the Defense and Security Forces, according to O País.

According to the district administrator, Quiterajo is currently the only administrative post in Macomia where residents have not been able to return to their original areas due to the presence of an armed group that has been operating in the region for several years. While the overall situation in the district is described as relatively calm, the security conditions in this specific location remain fragile.

“We still have problems in the administrative post of Quiterajo. It is the only post in the district where the population has not returned, as our Defense and Security Forces continue to operate on the ground, fighting and attempting to dislodge the terrorists,” said Macomia administrator Tomás Badai.

Due to the insecure climate, most of the district’s population, including state employees, is concentrated in Macomia town, currently considered the safest area. The heads of administrative posts and some local leaders have started performing their duties from the district headquarters, as conditions do not allow them to return to their respective areas.

“All the heads of administrative posts are working from the town, as well as some local leaders, because there are no security guarantees in their posts,” explained the administrator. Macomia has four administrative posts, which were at different times occupied by the armed group during the conflict. Authorities indicate that much of the state infrastructure was destroyed during the attacks, continuing to hinder the normalization of administrative and social life in the district.

Until security is fully restored in Quiterajo, the return of displaced residents remains uncertain, and the population continues to depend on the district headquarters for shelter, basic services, and public administration functions.
