The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) strengthened its partnership with the Ministry of National Defence during a meeting held in Maputo, aimed at consolidating strategic alignment in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado. The meeting highlighted the joint commitment to stability and security in that northern province of the country.
EUMAM MOZ, a European Union mission that provides military support to the Forças Armadas de Defesa de Moçambique (FADM), met with the Ministry of National Defence — the government body responsible for defence policy — to deepen strategic dialogue in the security and defence domain.
The European Union Ambassador to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore, was accompanied by the EUMAM MOZ Force Commander, Commodore César Pires Correia. Both met on Wednesday (18) with the Minister of National Defence, Cristóvão Chume, to assess the status of bilateral cooperation in the defence sector.
The main objective of the meeting was to consolidate alignment between Mozambique and the European Union in combating terrorism in Cabo Delgado province. The parties reiterated the importance of cooperation to curb instability affecting the region, strengthening coordination and the sharing of efforts on the ground.
The meeting also reaffirmed the joint commitment to regional stability and security, at a time when the European Union continues to support Mozambican authorities in strengthening defence capabilities. It should be recalled that since 15 October 2021, the European Union has directly supported the FADM, initially through the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM MOZ), created to train and build the capacity of Mozambican military personnel.
Under that mission, more than 1,700 soldiers were trained, receiving operational and specialised counterterrorism training while ensuring compliance with International Human Rights Law (IHRL) and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), including the protection of civilians.
Currently, EUMAM MOZ provides support to the FADM Rapid Reaction Forces — units prepared to respond immediately to threat situations — with the aim of consolidating a sustainable operational cycle. This support covers the preparation, deployment, and sustainment of forces, in compliance with IHL and IHRL, until June 2026, contributing to a safer and more stable environment for the populations of Cabo Delgado.
