The Mozambican Defense and Security Forces (FDS) have stepped up patrols on the Cabo Delgado coast to block the routes used to supply terrorist logistics in the province, Rádio Moçambique reported on Tuesday, March 19.
In effect, perimeters have been set for the movement of local populations to allow livelihood activities to flow in the region in a regulated manner, without jeopardizing security, the agency explained.
Marine Jesus Barreto, from the Pemba Naval Base, speaking to journalists during the ceremony to award a certificate of recognition to the Marine Base for its bravery in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado province, explained that there is coordinated work on the ground.
“Through the local authorities, we are working to identify who is crossing these perimeters and who is inside and outside, to avoid certain incidents, because we understand that the chiefs and secretaries of the neighbourhoods have documents issued by the government authorizing certain people to go to sea. We have a lot of fishermen, because many of our citizens in Cabo Delgado province live from fishing. Of course we’re not going to stop them from fishing,” said the marine, adding: “we have the identification assigned to these populations so we know who is authorized to fish, who should be in that area and who shouldn’t be. So we’re going to counter the insurgents’ progression”.
