Armed groups carried out attacks in villages in the Ancuabe district of Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique, causing approximately 1,500 people to flee between Monday and Wednesday, 31 March and 2 April, according to a statement from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The information was confirmed to RFI by a resident of the village of Nonia, who preferred to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. The resident said that the attackers, identified as terrorists, broke into the village and killed three people, two of them civilians.
They entered Nonia, it’s true. These ‘guys’ really attacked the village
According to the IOM, the attacks took place in the towns of Nonia and Mihecane, in the Ancuabe district, forcing the population to abandon their homes. Most of the displaced are children.
FRELIMO, Mozambique’s ruling party, has expressed concern about the current situation in Cabo Delgado. The party’s spokesperson, Ludmila Maguni, emphasised the seriousness of the attacks, encouraging the national and allied troops working on the ground to contain the advance of the terrorist groups that have been operating in the far north of Mozambique since October 2017.
