Brazil’s Minister of Education said today in Maputo that President Lula da Silva will visit Mozambique during his current term, highlighting a “very deep and friendly relationship” with the country.
“President Lula is very fond of Mozambique, he has already been here three times […] it will certainly be a pleasure to be here once again […] to visit Mozambique, a country he holds so dear and with which he has a deep relationship of friendship, especially in the cultural sphere,” said Camilo Santana, Brazil’s Minister of Education, who is currently in Mozambique for the 50th anniversary of independence.
Speaking to journalists, the minister praised Mozambique’s efforts in development, saying the country will continue to “grow, develop, and generate opportunities” for its people.
“We have a strong relationship in the field of education, with Mozambican postgraduate students in Brazil taking part in teacher training programs at the master’s and doctoral levels,” he noted, identifying economy, culture, and education as strategic areas for cooperation.
Mozambique is celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence today, with the main ceremony in Maputo, led by President Daniel Chapo and attended by several heads of state, including Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The central celebrations are being held at the historic Machava Stadium in the capital, where the country’s first president, Samora Machel, proclaimed independence in the early hours of June 25, 1975, following a struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime that began on September 25, 1964.
In addition to the president’s official speech, the ceremony includes military parades, cultural performances, a message from citizens who are also turning 50 (marking the same period as the country’s independence), and a speech by the leader of Podemos, the country’s main opposition party.
At least 40,000 people are expected to attend the event at Machava Stadium, which has an official capacity of 45,000. The event also features the arrival of the Flame of Unity, which has traveled throughout the country since April 7. The President will use the flame to light the stadium’s ceremonial pyre.
