A total of 62 schools destroyed by Cyclone Idai have been repaired since 2019 in Beira, Sofala province, central Mozambique, the local administrator told Lusa on Monday.
“A total of 62 schools have been rehabilitated, out of the 72 destroyed by Cyclone Idai,” said the district administrator of Beira, José Mutoroma.
According to him, the rehabilitated schools, with the support of the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office (Grepoc) and partners, operate in the administrative posts of Manga Loforte, Inhamízua, Chiveve, Nhangau and Munhava.
José Mutoroma also explained that the local government is in the process of mobilising funds for the rehabilitation of the other schools that were destroyed in the storm.
“We are locating some local partners and entrepreneurs who can help rehabilitate the schools in the district,” said the administrator.
Cyclone Idai hit the centre of Mozambique in March 2019, causing more than 600 deaths and affecting 1.8 million people.
Around 90% of Beira, the provincial capital of Sofala, was destroyed in the aftermath of the cyclone.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by global climate change, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
The last cyclones to pass through Mozambique, called Chido and Dikeledi, hit the northern region of the country between December last year and January, with the greatest impact on the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula, affecting around 736,000 people and causing the destruction of public and private infrastructure.
