The African Union Commission has signed grant agreements with 13 African think tanks, organized into three pan-African consortia, marking the formal launch of the Africa Think Tanks Platform (ATTP), a flagship initiative aimed at strengthening evidence-based policymaking and accelerating the implementation of Agenda 2063.
According to information published by Club of Mozambique, the program will run for five years with a total budget of $50 million, and will be implemented by the African Union Commission in partnership with the African Capacity Building Foundation and the African Union Development Agency.
Under the agreements, a total of $24.2 million will be disbursed in phases to support institutional capacity building, collaborative research, and the development of policy-ready solutions addressing Africa’s most pressing cross-border challenges, within the framework of the Africa Think Tanks Platform (ATTP).
“These grants will enable think tanks to generate practical policy evidence aligned with the priorities of Agenda 2063, supporting Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in translating continental commitments into tangible national and regional outcomes,” said Selma Malika Haddadi, Vice-President of the African Union Commission.
The three consortia receiving funding under the initiative are:
The Research Alliance for Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Development (RAISED), led by the Economic Research Forum, with the Partnership for Economic Policy and the Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre;
The Consortium for Evidence-Based Policy Sovereignty in Africa (CACEPS), led by the African Population and Health Research Center, with participation from the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies, the Center for Population and Environmental Development, the Center for Public Integrity, and the Initiative Prospective Agricole et Rurale;
The BRIDGE Africa project (Building Resilience and Impact through Dialogue and Driving Evidence-Based Policy Action), coordinated by the African Center for Economic Transformation, with the African Institute for Development Policy, the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation, the South African Institute of International Affairs, and the Policy Center for the New South.
The Vice-President highlighted that, through this initiative, research centers will develop policy solutions aligned with six strategic thematic areas: economic transformation and governance, regional trade, climate change, food security, human capital development, and digitalization.
“This investment reaffirms the African Union’s commitment to strengthening Africa’s intellectual infrastructure as a foundation for transformation. By empowering African think tanks to generate high-quality, policy-ready evidence, we ensure that Agenda 2063 is driven by African solutions,” concluded Selma Malika Haddadi.
