The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) of Mozambique, Beatriz Buchili, said on Monday 16 September that the country must not make corruption normal, warning that it is a type of crime that ‘feeds’ other crimes, especially terrorism and money laundering.
‘We cannot have a society that normalises acts of corruption that contribute to the practice of organised crime, such as terrorism and its financing, money laundering, illegal immigration, kidnapping, human and drug trafficking,’ she argued.
She said that the lack of integrity on the part of public servants favours the squandering of the country’s natural resources and diverts the necessary resources to create the conditions for citizens to access basic services.
‘Corruption is one of the biggest challenges we face as a society. This evil corrodes the essence of the rule of law, diverts resources that could be used for essential services and undermines the population’s trust in leaders and institutions,’ he explained.
Buchili defended a new dynamic in the fight against corruption and related crimes, as part of the strategy of the Attorney General’s Office, pointing out that a strategic plan has been approved with priority points.
‘This plan is aligned not only with the Public Administration’s guidelines, but also with the international conventions to which Mozambique is a signatory, reinforcing our commitment to adopting the best global practices in the fight against corruption,’ he said.
In August, the GCCC announced that in the first half of the year it had recovered assets valued at 128 million meticals in corruption cases, as well as processing more than a thousand cases.
