The Attorney General of the Republic, Américo Letela, this Tuesday (25) urged the Central Office for Combating Organised and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) to urgently strengthen its response capacity in the face of the increase in crimes such as kidnappings, terrorism and drug trafficking in the country.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for new members of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Letela addressed the new director of the GCCCOT, Amélia Munguambe, directly, emphasising that the current context demands coordinated action, firmness and concrete results in the fight against these complex forms of crime.
‘It is imperative that the GCCCOT step up its intervention in the face of the growing sophistication of organised crime. Kidnappings continue to sow fear among citizens and undermine confidence in institutions,’ said the attorney general.
Letela’s appeal comes at a time when the country is facing a series of challenges in the fight against transnational crime, including networks linked to drug trafficking and terrorist activities, particularly in northern Mozambique.
According to the PGR, there is a need for coordinated work between institutions, with greater investment in criminal investigation, strategic intelligence and international co-operation.
Amélia Munguambe, a lawyer with extensive experience in the Public Prosecutor’s Office, now takes over the leadership of the GCCCOT with the mission of restructuring the office’s operational actions and promoting faster and more effective responses to threats affecting public security.
The ceremony also served to swear in other provincial directors and prosecutors, in a move aimed at revitalising the functioning of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and strengthening the fight against crime in all its dimensions.
