At Least 12 Dead, 20 Injured on Roads Accidents in Week 4-10 January – Police

At least 12 people died and another 20 were injured in road accidents in Mozambique in one week, the police announced.

The deaths were the result of 12 accidents between 4th and 10th January, compared to eight in the same period in 2024, including six pedestrians being run over and two crashes, the police (PRM) said in a statement.

According to the police, accidents caused by excessive speed and erratic turning caused nine serious injuries, compared to two in 2024, and 11 minor injuries, compared to one, as well as “significant material damage”.

According to the authorities, 43,482 vehicles were inspected during the period, 1,533 fines were imposed, 39 vehicles were seized and four individuals were arrested for illegal driving and active corruption in the prevention and combating of accidents.

The number of deaths in road accidents in Mozambique fell by 5% in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, but there are still, on average, two deaths a day on Mozambican roads, according to official figures previously reported by Lusa.

According to a report by the ministry of transport and communications, there were 310 road accidents in the first six months of the year, compared to 357 in the same period of 2023, a reduction of 13%.

These accidents caused 366 deaths compared to 387 in 2023 (-5%), and 271 serious injuries, down 8% year-on-year.

In the first six months of 2024, the roads in Inhambane and Gaza province (south) were the deadliest, with 55 and 46 deaths respectively, followed by Nampula (45), in the north, and Maputo city (43).
