Around 1,200 Drug Trafficking Cases Opened Last Year

The Attorney General’s Office opened around 1,200 criminal cases related to drug trafficking last year. The vulnerability of the borders is pointed out by the PGR as the main cause of the increase in cases.

Mozambique is still considered one of the main drug corridors.

This has contributed to a 70 per cent increase in criminal cases brought by the Attorney General’s Office between 2022 and 2023.

The problem, according to the deputy attorney general, is partly caused by fragile borders. “There is some fragility in our borders. We have drug trafficking, which enters through the border posts, but we also have some situations that are detected at the airports,” explained Amabélia Chuquela, deputy attorney general of the Republic.

In addition to drug trafficking, the Public Prosecutor’s Office is also concerned about corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing, crimes which, for the Attorney General, Beatriz Buchili, are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

When it comes to the fight against international drug trafficking, terrorism and violent extremism, “more than a clear definition of priorities, states must be organised.”

With a view to improving combat strategies, the Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane, chaired a meeting this Monday between the attorneys-general of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, CPLP.

“The Public Prosecutors’ Offices are challenged to improve the mechanisms that make it possible to speed up and facilitate the sharing and exchange of information relating, among other matters, to the opening of investigations, criminal proceedings, drug seizures made at ports, airports and railway and road terminals.”

The meeting, which brings together, as well as CPLP attorneys-general, directors of police and criminal investigation services, will take place over two days.
