The Regional Water Administration of the Centre (ARA-Centro) has called for the immediate withdrawal of the population living in the coastal areas of the provinces of Tete, Manica, Sofala and Zambézia, in view of the peak of the coming rainy season, Radio Mozambique (RM) reported on Thursday, 4 January.
The appeal, which follows the approach of the peak of the rainy season, is aimed at the inhabitants of the districts of Doa and Mutarara in Tete, Chemba Caia and Marromeu in Sofala province, Mopeia and Morrumbala in Zambézia and Tambara in Manica.
The head of the Water Resources Department in ARA-Centro, Francisco Macaríngue, quoted by RM, said that despite the weather forecasts indicating low rainfall due to the El Niño phenomenon, people should remove their belongings from areas prone to natural disasters.
El Niño is a climatic phenomenon, involving atmospheric and oceanic factors, characterised by rising temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, in which the abnormal change in temperature causes significant climatic changes, mainly in the tropical belt of the globe. The phenomenon generates changes in the weather patterns of temperature and precipitation, causing torrential rains as well as severe droughts.
