ADE Highlights Use of Geographic Information to Reduce Negative Impact of Climate Change

The National Geospatial Development Agency (ADE) recently drew the world’s attention to the negative impact caused by climate change, stressing that it is extremely important for countries around the world, especially Mozambique, to use geographic information, as it allows them to issue an urgent response and minimise the damage.

“The use of geographic information makes it possible to provide an urgent response to populations affected by climate change (cyclones and floods) and helps share data to facilitate the identification of risk areas, in a context where Mozambique has been suffering cyclically from extreme events,” said the director-general of ADE, Odete Semião, during the 13th United Nations meeting on Global Management.

According to a press release, the purpose of the event was to follow up and deliberate on the results of the work carried out last year at the 12th session, including the evaluation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to the official quoted in the note, “these meetings are an opportunity to network with cooperation partners and civil society, as well as to get support for the implementation of various projects”.

“These events make it easier to raise support to respond to possible cases. For example, in February, Mozambique was hit by Cyclone Freddy. However, through the United Nations Satellite Centre, it was possible to obtain data on the affected areas and the number of potential victims, almost in real time, which helped in the response to this catastrophe,” he pointed out.

The National Geospatial Development Agency was set up in 2020 by the government and aims to ensure the coordination and promotion of good planning practices.
