Around 1,000 families are living in flooded homes in the municipality of Marromeu, Sofala province, central Mozambique, due to the saturation of soils following flooding, authorities said.
“The population is living under water, due to flooding,” the administrator of Marromeu, Henriqueta do Rosario, told reporters.
The floods are also hampering the functioning of public services and commerce, Rosario advanced.
In total, 33 schools are flooded in Marromeu, forcing some 3,000 students to attend classes in improvised classrooms.
The administrator of Marromeu explained that due to the saturation of the soils, water is coming out from under the ground affecting public and private infrastructures.
“What is happening is that the soils are all saturated and the level of the river watercourse has also increased,” added the delegate of the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGD) in Sofala province, Aristides Armando.
“We are providing assistance with food and non-food items to the affected families,” Armando said.
He said that INGD is studying new areas for the resettlement of families living in flooded lands in the municipality of Marromeu.
