Germany Calls for Global Mobilisation to Support Mozambique on Climate Change

German parliamentarian Johannes Wagner on Thursday called for greater international mobilisation to support Mozambique in addressing climate change, with a particular focus on strengthening food security in the face of the phenomenon’s mounting impacts.

According to Lusa, Wagner said he intends to raise the issue with his colleagues in the German parliament at a time when Mozambique is contending with climate-related disruptions affecting communities, agricultural output, and food security across multiple regions of the country.

“I will convey this message to my parliamentary colleagues in Germany so that we can continue to fight, so that we can continuously support Mozambique,” the MP stated.

The remarks were made during a visit to a community in Manhiça district, Maputo province, where activities under the Value-Added Agriculture Development and Capacity Building Programme (PROCAVA) are being implemented. The programme is promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture with support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

In addition to PROCAVA, Mozambique is implementing several other community support programmes in the agricultural and fisheries sectors, covering the country’s southern, central, and northern regions.

During the visit, National Director of Agriculture Jabula Zibia highlighted two ongoing initiatives before the German MP: the Resilient Artisanal Fisheries Development Project (PROPEIXE) and the Small-Scale Aquaculture Development Project (PRODAPE), which he said “have a major impact on the lives of communities.”

Zibia explained that fishing activity complements agricultural production and contributes to increasing the availability of animal protein in communities, thereby reinforcing food security.

The focus on these sectors comes against a backdrop of persistent food security challenges in Mozambique. Data from the Food Security Cluster (FSC) indicate that 1.194 million people received food assistance or agricultural production support in the first half of 2026.

The FSC further reported that 1.71 million people required urgent humanitarian assistance and protection in 2026. Of that total, 977,110 were affected by the armed conflict in the north, principally in Cabo Delgado, while 733,518 faced the impacts of flooding in the south, mainly in Gaza province.

The response to climate and food vulnerabilities is also aligned with the government’s strategy to boost agricultural productivity, which envisages mobilising approximately two billion dollars over the next four years.
