The government has guaranteed the timely distribution of school books and said that all the conditions are already in place for the start of the 2025 school year throughout the country. However, it admits that there is a shortage of almost 12,000 teachers, recognising that some education professionals will have to work overtime to meet the needs, reports Lusa.
According to the spokesman for the Council of Ministers, Inocêncio Impissa, during the body’s second ordinary session on Tuesday (28) in Maputo, more than a million new staff are entering the national primary and secondary education system. However, this number is still far from meeting the needs of the sector and making up for the deficit.
Impissa, who is also Minister of State Administration and Civil Service, explained that the problem of overtime is related to the lack of professionals to meet demand.
With regard to the opening of the 2025 school year, the spokesman assured that the conditions are already in place for the timely distribution of primary and secondary school books.’ An effort is being made to make the books available in two formats, physical and electronic,’ he emphasised.
‘In either case, the most important thing is that the book is available to schools, teachers and, above all, pupils. This is the effort that is being made so that classes can start without any problems,’ he emphasised.
Inocêncio Impissa pointed out that the school year will start without constraints, despite the challenges related to insufficient infrastructure, since some classrooms were destroyed during the post-election demonstrations and others by cyclones Chido and Dikeledi, which mainly affected the northern region of Mozambique.
