The Swiss government announced on Friday, January 30, an increase in its humanitarian aid, totaling 1 million Swiss francs (CHF), in solidarity with the populations affected by the floods in southern Mozambique and in support of emergency response efforts.
According to a statement released by the Swiss Embassy in Mozambique, the heavy rains have caused human losses and significant damage to communities and public infrastructure in the region, leaving thousands of families vulnerable. Swiss cooperation in Mozambique, historically focused on the northern provinces, has now decided to mobilize additional resources to respond to the urgent needs of the south of the country.
According to the document, the humanitarian aid will be channeled through two main interventions. The first consists of aerial support for search and rescue operations, valued at CHF 100,000, implemented by the Swiss organization Mercy Air, allowing access to isolated areas.
The second intervention corresponds to a contribution of CHF 1 million to the World Food Programme (WFP), aimed at ensuring emergency food assistance for the most vulnerable populations affected by the floods.
With this measure, Switzerland reaffirms its commitment to Mozambique, contributing to a rapid and effective humanitarian response, the protection of human lives, and the mitigation of the impacts of natural disasters in the country.
