2025-26 Rainy Season: INGD Reports 85 Deaths and Over 100,000 Affected Nationwide

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) reported that 85 people died, 70 were injured, and 105,100 others were affected by climate-related events during the 2025-26 rainy season.

In Mozambique, the rainy season begins in October and lasts until April. According to the report with data up to January 7, at least 20,700 families were impacted by severe weather, including strong winds and heavy rains, accompanied by lightning, as well as subsequent floods, fires, and cholera outbreaks.

The INGD reported that so far, 9,851 houses have been totally or partially destroyed, while 8,969 were flooded, in addition to 13 health units and 39 places of worship being affected. “In the education sector, the rainy season impacted 42,600 students, 688 teachers, 312 classrooms, 122 schools, and 27 administrative blocks, and in agriculture, over 6,400 hectares of farmland were devastated, affecting 2,866 farmers.”

The document cited by Lusa also stated that at least 832 animals—including cattle, goats, and poultry—died, 86 power poles fell, and 20 kilometers of roads were destroyed due to extreme weather.

“During this period, 15 accommodation centers were opened, of which 11 have since been closed, leaving four still active, collectively sheltering 4,303 people.” In October, the Government approved the national contingency plan for the 2025-26 rainy season, valued at 14 billion meticais, although it admitted that only 6 billion meticais of the necessary funds were available.

Mozambique is currently in the midst of its rainy season, a period marked by alerts for heavy rains and strong winds, especially in the Central and Southern regions, with authorities taking preemptive measures against floods and inundations in those areas.

The country is considered one of the most severely affected by climate change, cyclically facing floods and tropical cyclones. During the last rainy season (2024-25), Mozambique was hit by Cyclones Chido, Dikeledi, and Jude, which caused at least 313 deaths, injured 1,255 people, and affected over 1.8 million.

Extreme weather events have caused at least 1,016 deaths in Mozambique between 2019 and 2023, affecting approximately 4.9 million people, according to the National Institute of Statistics.
