Zambezia province is facing a shortage of petrol at filling stations due to the interruption of National Road Number One (N1), in the section located in Nampula province.
The supply of petrol to Quelimane, the province’s main city, depends essentially on the Nacala-Zambézia route, which has been affected, while the alternative via Beira presents difficulties due to the deterioration of the road.
Since last week, the availability of petrol has been limited, affecting petrol stations throughout the city. In Quelimane, where there are more than 10 petrol stations, some are completely out of stock, with Petromoc being one of the most affected companies.
The provincial government has recognised the situation and is monitoring supply developments. According to the authorities, the petrol stations supplied by private companies have started to receive new consignments of fuel, allowing distribution to gradually resume.
Meanwhile, road traffic between Nampula and Nacala-Porto has been re-established after a diversion was opened in the Anchilo area, where flooding caused by tropical storm Jude caused the N1 to be cut off.
The measure also made it possible to connect the coastal districts of Ilha de Moçambique, Mossuril and Memba, which were temporarily isolated.
With the reopening of the EN1, fuel supplies to Zambézia are expected to gradually normalise, although restocking still depends on transport logistics and the ability of suppliers to respond.
