The Basílio Muhate, Minister of Economy, reported that tourist arrivals in Mozambique rose to 1.27 million in 2025, corresponding to an increase of nearly 15% compared to the 1.09 million recorded in 2024, highlighting that this is an indicator reflecting the consistent recovery and growing resilience of the sector.
According to the minister, this growth occurred in a year still heavily marked by post-election protests, which since October 2024 have caused over 400 deaths and significant destruction.
The number of foreign tourists in hotels in Mozambique more than tripled in five years, reaching nearly 760,000 in 2024, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which also pointed to a decline in Mozambican hotel guests.
According to the INE’s statistical yearbook for 2024, recently concluded, foreign guests in the country’s hotel establishments rose from 216,297 in 2020 to 757,458 in 2024, a period that includes legal changes exempting tourists from 29 countries from visas.
Inhambane Province, in the south, considered the most touristic province in the country, received a total of 170,292 foreign tourists in 2024, but this flow was concentrated in the capital area, with 220,500 foreigners in hotels in Maputo Province, plus 179,587 in Maputo city. Meanwhile, the number of Mozambican hotel guests nationwide fell 18%, from 1,336,088 in 2020 to 1,097,864 in 2024, though the INE did not provide an explanation for this decline.
The Government launched a new online portal for tourism visa registration on Wednesday (12), after suspending the mandatory pre-registration in May 2025 due to technical problems in the system. “Through this platform, everyone wishing to visit Mozambique can now do so by submitting a prior application to obtain authorization to travel to the country, securing the visa online,” announced Américo Muchanga, Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation.
The new portal was presented at the opening of the National Conference on Digital Transformation in Maputo. “Through this platform, we want to take the first step to allow Mozambique to truly become an attractive tourist destination, visited by everyone, and to simplify the process of obtaining that authorization,” added the minister while presenting the platform.
