On Thursday, June 11, the Portuguese Council of Ministers approved, by decree, a Cooperation Agreement between Portugal and Mozambique in the field of tourism.
In a statement cited by Lusa, the government stated that the agreement aims to foster structured, lasting, and sustainable cooperation between the two countries. “It provides for the sharing of experiences, best practices, and technical expertise, as well as the implementation of joint tourism promotion programs, strategic partnerships, and professional training and capacity-building initiatives,” it noted.
In May, the Mozambican government also ratified the cooperation agreement with Portugal in the area of tourism during a Council of Ministers meeting. The document is part of a set of initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector, with a focus on vocational training, improving tourism offerings, destination promotion, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
In December of last year, the Portuguese government expressed its commitment to supporting the creation of a Tourism Training Hotel in Mozambique, an initiative expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the sector and promote the improvement of Mozambique’s tourism offerings. The decision is included in the final declaration of the 6th Luso-Mozambican Summit, held in the city of Porto.
The document, signed by Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and President Daniel Chapo, underscores the intention of both countries to intensify cooperation in the areas of vocational training, tourism promotion, innovation, and knowledge exchange, with a view to boosting bilateral tourism flows.
“They also expressed their commitment to establishing, at the appropriate time, a Tourism Training Hotel in Mozambique, involving the private sector,” states the final declaration, without, however, providing a timeline for the project’s implementation.
The creation of the Hotel-School represents a strategic investment in training specialized personnel, while strengthening the link between the public and private sectors in promoting more qualified, sustainable, and competitive tourism.
In addition to tourism, the summit noted progress in other areas of cooperation. In the field of culture, the two governments committed to intensifying artistic exchanges, promoting the mobility of creators, and strengthening the preservation of their shared historical heritage. The role of the Portuguese language as a factor of shared identity within the Portuguese-speaking world was also reiterated, with an emphasis on its promotion in the education and culture sectors.
