The Port of Maputo expects to receive 15 cruise ship calls this year, bringing an estimated total of 16,000 tourists to the Mozambican capital, according to data from the institution. Each call is expected to boost the local economy and reinforce Maputo’s role as a tourist destination.
According to information released by the Port of Maputo in a statement quoted by Lusa, “this season, 15 stopovers are planned, which will bring nearly 16,000 visitors to Maputo.” The institution stressed that each arrival represents more than just numbers. “These are new opportunities for the local economy, for small businesses, for tour operators, and for those who live in the city every day,” the document reads. The goal is to maximize the direct and indirect benefits of these stopovers.
The institution added that each stopover is also an opportunity for cultural promotion. The initiatives are organized in partnership with the National Tourism Institute and the Maputo Handicraft, Flowers, and Gastronomy Fair. This collaboration aims to promote Mozambican culture and boost local trade. At the same time, it seeks to provide an authentic experience for visitors.
“Whenever one of these giants docks at the Port of Maputo, a fair is held showcasing local crafts, culture, and talent, bringing the best of Mozambique to our visitors,” said the port, adding that these events allow tourists to interact directly with local producers and artists.
In 2024, Mozambique received at least nine cruise ships, with almost 4,492 tourists, mostly in Maputo. Visitors came mainly from Asian and European countries, according to the latest government data available until September of that year. Of the total, 2,069 tourists disembarked to visit tourist attractions.
After that period, the country experienced months of post-election unrest. The demonstrations, related to the general election process on October 9, 2024, resulted in episodes of violence. According to data released at the time, 400 people died. This context created additional challenges for the image and the tourism sector.
Despite this scenario, revenues from foreign tourists exceeded US$200 million in 2024. The sector remained an important source of foreign exchange for the country. The data are contained in official reports on economic performance. Tourism continues to be identified as one of the strategic pillars of development.
The first Five-Year Government Program 2025-29, led by President Daniel Chapo and approved by Parliament, indicates that international tourism revenues amounted to more than $221.2 million. The document predicts that this figure will reach $391.9 million in 2029. The goal reflects the commitment to the recovery and expansion of the sector.
