The administration of Maputo National Park (PNM) received around 20,000 visitors in 2023, which is far short of the target of 100,000 visitors.
As a result, the administration of the biodiversity conservation area says that the income from visits is still not enough to guarantee the sustainability of the PNM.
The information was provided by the administrator of the PNM, Miguel Gonçalves, in an interview with Radio Moçambique, the national broadcaster.
Goncalves also expressed his displeasure at the behaviour of some citizens who pass through the PNM and throw rubbish indiscriminately, especially empty bottles of alcoholic drinks.
‘Unfortunately there are people who pass through and insist on throwing rubbish away, and this is not a commendable act, as this rubbish is also associated with alcohol consumption. There are a lot of containers with alcohol in them, which is worrying because these are people who are driving. Another practice that worries us a lot is speeding,’ said Gonçalves.
The infrastructure manager also pointed to staff training and the acquisition of new security and surveillance equipment as factors that have been reducing poaching in this biodiversity conservation region.
Gonçalves lamented the case of motorists driving at high speed along the road that crosses Maputo National Park, which constitutes a danger to wildlife and people.
