INE: Mozambique Attracted 1.1 Million Foreign Visitors in 2023, a 43% Drop Before COVID-19

Mozambique received over 1.1 million foreign visitors in 2023, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

The country registered 1,153,698 visitors in 2023, of which 65.5 percent came for leisure, the media outlet quoted Adriano Matsimbe, national director of sectoral and business statistics at Mozambique’s National Institute of Statistics, as saying.

The figure represents a 43 percent drop compared to that of 2019, when 2,032,923 foreigners visited Mozambique, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The data was presented by the official at the opening Thursday of the 10th edition of the International Tourism Fair in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

South Africa was the main country of origin for tourists, representing 33.5 percent of the total, followed by Portugal, 10.3 percent, the United Kingdom, 6.2 percent, the United States, 6.2 percent, Italy, 4.4 percent, Brazil, 3.8 percent, India, 2.6 percent, and China, 2.3 percent, the report said.
