Festive Season: “315,000 Guests and 85% to 100% Occupancy Expected in Coastal Area”, Government

The Mozambican Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edelvina Materula, revealed on Tuesday 12 December that the country’s hotels expect to receive more than 315,000 guests during the festive season, with an estimated occupancy rate of more than 85% in the country’s coastal areas.

She said that in some areas, such as the province of Inhambane, it is already “very difficult” to make bookings, due to the capacity of some tourist resorts.

“In this coming festive season, we expect to have more than 315,000 guests and an average occupancy rate of between 85% and 100% in the coastal area,” she said.

Speaking in South Africa, during the debut ceremony of the flight linking Maputo to Cape Town and vice versa, the minister revealed that in the first half of 2023, Mozambican hotels registered around 1.3 million guests compared to 139,400 in the same period of 2022.

According to the data presented, in terms of revenue from international tourism, the first half of 2023 saw an inflow of around 83 million dollars into the country’s balance of payments, compared to 72 million dollars in 2022.
